Snowy Seattle
It’s been way too long between posts here and I have a nine month-old to pin the blame on. It’s been quite the adjustment period but I couldn’t be happier. We’ve had a few snowy days here in Seattle and I just wanted to share this view from Lincoln Park. The water and the sky were the same color making the shore feel a little like the edge of the world.

Remembering September 11th
Ten years ago. Wow. I guess every generation has their “I’ll always remember where I was when” moment and this was mine.
I was three months in to my photo internship at the Birmingham News in Alabama. I was in the office checking my assignments when our photo secretary mentioned a small plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. We joked about it at first wondering how in the world a pilot could miss seeing that. Then we turned on the tv.
The director of photography arrived in the photo office and people stopped in to watch coverage as they ate their breakfast from the cafeteria down the hall. As soon as the word that all flights were grounded was given, I was off to the airport. Just as I gathered my gear and headed out the door, the first tower fell. From what I glimpsed on the way out, it looked as if just the top chunk of building fell. It wasn’t until I was in the car listening to NPR that I realized the entire building had collapsed. And then the second tower fell.
When I arrived at the airport I was greeted by a lot of security. K-9 units were all over inside. Flights were being diverted and landing, leaving passengers confused about what to do next. Some planes were too big for the jetways and had to wait on the tarmac until stairs could be found. At the time, the Birmingham airport had no televisions broadcasting the 24- hour news cycle. The passengers I spoke with said the pilots hadn’t told them why they were landing in Birmingham. For them, I was the first to deliver the news of what had happened. I still wonder how many of those people had a loved one die that day. To how many was I the bearer of horrific, life altering news?
There wasn’t much to photograph at the airport. Sold out signs at the car rental counters were plentiful, as were passengers sitting on luggage, studying road maps, calling loved ones. I shot what I could and headed back downtown to process my film because it had been decided to print an Extra edition that day.
Back at the office as I was poring over images on the wire I kept thinking ‘where are the images from street level?’ Everything we’d seen on tv had been aerial shots. When I saw Suzanne Plunkett’s image of the people running ahead of the debris cloud it took the day to a whole new level for me.
For the next few days I was out in the community shooting patriotic displays, folks raising flags and having vigils. At an elementary school I was amazed at the drawings kids were creating to express their feelings about the tragedy.
As a visual person, the images from that day are seared into my memory. Will ten more years blur them a little?

Linsey & Nikolai | Deception Pass State Park Wedding
There is something about Skagit County that is good for my soul. Something about the wheat being harvested, the low valley that allows you to see the dust clouds of combines miles away and the smell of dirt and diesel in the air that takes me home. So I was super excited to travel north for Linsey and Nikolai’s wedding at Deception Pass State Park. Theirs was the third wedding I’ve photographed in the park and each one has had a stunning view and stellar weather. They held their ceremony at the outdoor amphitheatre but encouraged their guests to gather near them for the ceremony. A beach reception followed where the couple ate at their own kitchen table planted in the sand. More images can be viewed and purchased here.

Babies with mustaches
My husband has a mustache. A pretty fantastic handlebar mustache. We also have a pretty fantastic baby. When it came time for a Father’s Day gift I decided to try making the little guy look a bit more like his Dad. Needless to say, putting mustaches on babies was a hit and friends came over to take part. Enjoy the following and feel free to “caption” the photos in the comments.

Ruby | One year-old | Seattle Photography
Little Ruby is now a year old! It seems like just yesterday that I was shooting maternity portraits of Rachael and Nate. This was the third session with them, after having done a six-month shoot as well. It’s amazing how fast these little ones grow. To view more photos or order prints, please visit this gallery.

Samara & David | Seattle Maternity Photos
I met Samara and David in our birthing class only six weeks ago. They just moved to Seattle and it has been great getting to know them. I had a great time photographing their maternity portrait session. From David’s perspective it must have been funny seeing two pregnant women scooting around on the floor, one telling the other how to pose, then both trying to get up off the floor. They are expecting their little guy this week and I’m super excited to meet him! To view more images or purchase prints and downloads, please visit the extended gallery.
Katie & Skip | Seattle Maternity Photos
I was fortunate enough to photograph Katie and Skip’s wedding several years ago. Now they’re expecting a baby girl! We made the trek up to their cabin on Snoqualmie Pass last weekend. Too much snow and ice made it too treacherous for two pregnant ladies to tromp around outside, so we turned the house into a workable studio. Congrats and best of luck with the babe! Seattle Chinese Garden | Seattle Wedding Venue
I visited the newly opened Seattle Chinese Garden today in West Seattle and the first thing I thought was, ‘this would be an awesome wedding venue’. The gardens are still under construction and will eventually be a five-acre Sichuan-style garden. The design and building work has been done by artisans from Seattle’s sister city of Chongqing, China who praised the site’s excellent fengshui. So far, the Knowing the Spring courtyard and the Pine and Plum Pavilion are the only structures completed.
Wedding ceremonies could take place in the courtyard with the main gate as a gorgeous, dramatic background. Water ponds, bamboo groves, rock gardens and long corridors with lattice windows provide ample areas for portraits of the couple. The Space Needle and downtown skyline are also visible from the site.
